For a buyer planning a regional network, the practical challenge is timing: which capability can serve customers now, and which belongs in a later investment decision?
Turn a generation label into a specific requirement
As reviewed on 7 October 2026, ITU’s IMT-2030 framework guides 6G development; it is not a completed universal commercial deployment specification. Claims about 7G should be treated as speculative concepts, not an established ITU generation with guaranteed services. For procurement, ask which released specification, radio band, device, certification and operational service a proposal actually supports. A generation name alone cannot establish coverage, latency or interoperability.
Satellite access and satellite backhaul are different designs
3GPP Release 17 introduced standardized NTN work for satellite access. Distinguish a satellite terminal carrying ordinary network backhaul from a device using standardized non-terrestrial radio access. Orbit, gateway location, spectrum, visibility, weather and handover affect service. Propagation obeys distance: an assumed 1,200 km free-space path alone takes about 4 ms one way at 300,000 km/s, excluding other legs and processing. This is a geometry example, not a provider latency promise.
Leave room to evolve while keeping service measurable
For a hybrid site, compare fiber, terrestrial radio and satellite by actual failure dependencies. Two links sharing electricity, a gateway or an upstream core may fail together.
Define traffic priorities when backup capacity is lower: essential control and communications before bulk transfer. Test failover, return to primary, address changes, VPN continuity and degraded application behavior. A forward-looking architecture reserves interfaces for emerging technologies while delivering a measurable service on available equipment today.

A decision for regional networks
For 4G and 5G sites, dependable transport, timing and recovery remain immediate priorities. Keep future radio options in the design, with spending tied to demonstrated compatibility and an actual deployment requirement.
